Not the real thing
I have been using this product for years and love it. This recent purchase is not the real thing, and unfortunately I purchased and paid for two of them at once. I compared it to one I already have. 2. It smells different, i,e, rancid, 2. There is a smaller amount in the container, it seems to be contracted into a small lump. 3. There is no protective lid under the cover and over the mouth of the jar. All original Neutrogena products in a jar have these. 4. The .3% is not written on the jar as it usually is and is nowhere to be found on the packaging or container.

FOLLOW THE PACKAGE DIRECTIONS!
Let’s be clear. I am 65 years old with wrinkles, so I am not expecting miracles. Even though my skin is sensitive, it has been “good skin” – especially in the last 30 years – no blemishes or discolorations, and very smooth. My dermatologist suggested this particular product as it was the strongest OTC retinol you could get. He said it would help “strengthen” my skin and even it out. But he cautioned me to only use a pea-sized amount for my whole face and only apply it at night, because it reacts badly with the sun. I followed his and the package directions to a T. I washed my face first, used my nightly eye cream just on my eyes, applied the Neutrogena everywhere except my eyes, then moisturized with my normal night cream. The first night, the retinol immediately made my face red, but it didn’t sting. (With my sensitive skin, I was anticipating a ZING! But nothing.) Per the directions, I waited a couple nights and followed the same routine. Same result. Repeated it a couple nights later, then went to every other night, then graduated to “almost” nightly. It still makes my face red, but I still have never felt dryness or stinging. Do I see a difference after one month? Can’t say I do YET, but I am going to give it at least 90 days. If there’s even a HINT of improvement, I am sticking with it. A jar will last for MONTHS so it’s not that expensive in the big scheme of things. (P.S. I noticed no scent whatsoever, and, no, it is NOT a moisturizer, so you need to stick with your normal moisturizer over the top of this.)

I don’t like the package as other comments here, but for the function: age care, it’s the best I have never had. I usually use it at night , and when I wake up, my skin does look much better.

The product was old or damaged by heat. It had conjealed into a weird jelly. I suspect the active ingredient of retinol is ineffective. Upon querying this I was simply told it has no expiration date despite the website of the brand saying not to use products that have changed in consistency for fear of damaging your skin. I could not get a replacement and my query was simply closed which I find quite unprofessional.
